Is the nightmare at Virginia Tech over? Last week, Korean Americans in the southern U.S. state were afraid it was all starting again when a senior student of Korean descent at the college was found dead in the parking lot of a shopping center nearby, a gunshot wound to his head. It revived the fresh memory of the crazed Korean student who killed 32 people on April 16 before turning the gun on himself. Was this a revenge killing? However, local police announced that the student in the parking lot was a presumed suicide who had suffered from depression.

On Dec. 5, Eric Welch, a student at Virginia Tech, pays homage to Daniel Perez, one of the victims he went to high school with,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in front of a memorial monument on campus. It has been eight months since a crazed shooter killed 32 innocent people.
�� The scene of the crime
When the Chosun Ilbo visited early this month, sleet covered the campus of Virginia Tech. Since the shooting,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the school has treated students' psychological trauma by drastically increasing the number of psychological counselors. Macy Barnes, a freshman who entered the school in September, said it is reiterating the importance of counseling at every opportunity -- at the freshman orientation program or in class.

From Roth conversions to changes in reporting capital gains and losses, there were a number of tax changes in 2011. Whether you already know about them or simply need a reminder, here's a look at 10 changes in 2011 that might benefit you, the taxpayer, this tax season.
1. April 17 Tax Deadline: Two Extra Days to File and Pay

5. New Way to Report Capital Gains and Losses
In 2011, eligible self-employed individuals and S corporation shareholders can use the self-employed health insurance deduction to reduce their income tax liability. Premiums paid for health insurance covering the taxpayer, spouse and dependents generally qualify for this deduction. In addition, premiums paid to cover an adult child under age 27 at the end of the year, also qualify, even if the child is not the taxpayer's dependent. However, the deduction from self-employment income for determining self-employment tax, which was available only in tax-year 2010, no longer applies.
Taxpayers across the nation will have until Tuesday, April 17, 2012, to file their 2011 income tax returns and pay any taxes due. Taxpayers have extra time because April 15 falls on Sunday, and Emancipation Day, a holiday in the District of Columbia, is observed the following day on Monday, April 16. By law, filing deadlines that fall on D.C. holidays are extended to the next day that is not a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday.
As in 2010, income limits no longer apply to rollovers or conversions to Roth IRAs from other retirement plans. However, unlike 2010 conversions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all of the income resulting from a 2011 conversion must be included on the taxpayer's 2011 return.
For 2010 conversions, only half of the resulting income must be included in income in tax-year 2011 and the other half is reported in 2012, unless the taxpayer chose to include all of it in income for 2010.

In most cases, taxpayers now use new Form 8949 to report capital gain and loss transactions. Schedule D, the form traditionally used to show these individual transactions, is now used as a summary sheet, reporting amounts for total sales price, basis and other adjustments for all individual transactions, and for figuring the tax. For securities both bought and sold in 2011, the Form 1099-B, issued by the broker, normally shows the taxpayer's basis.
7. AMT Exemption Increased
Taxpayers must report specified foreign financial assets on new Form 8938, if the aggregate value of those assets exceeds certain thresholds. This new requirement is designed to improve tax compliance by taxpayers with offshore financial assets. Form 8938 is separate from and does not replace the existing requirement that U.S. persons with financial accounts located in a foreign country report those accounts to the Treasury Department using Form TD F 90-22.1. Unlike Form TD F 90-22.1, Form 8938 is attached to a taxpayer's income tax return. Individuals who do not have an income tax return filing requirement need not file Form 8938.
Separately, a repayment requirement also applies where a taxpayer purchased a home and claimed the credit on a prior year return and then sold it or stopped using it as a main home in 2011.

Legislation, enacted in December 2010, extended several popular tax benefits,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including the American opportunity credit for parents and students, the enhanced child tax credit and the expanded Earned Income Tax Credit.

Because of the way the credit is figured, in many cases, it may only be helpful to people who make energy-saving home improvements for the first time in 2011. That's because homeowners must first subtract any non-business energy property credits claimed on their 2006, 2007, 2009 or 2010 returns before claiming this credit for 2011.
Though the credit has expired for most home buyers, certain members of the armed forces and some other taxpayers who bought a home early in 2011 may still qualify for the credit on their 2011 return.
The Form 8938 filing requirement applies to U.S. citizens and resident aliens, nonresident aliens who elect to file a joint income tax return and certain nonresidents who live in a U.S. territory. Form 8938 is required when the total value of specified foreign assets exceeds certain thresholds. For example, a married couple living in the U.S. and filing a joint tax return would only file Form 8938 if their total specified foreign assets exceed $100,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 on the last day of the tax year or more than $150,000 at any time during the tax year.
As before, the insurance plan must be set up under the taxpayer's business, and the taxpayer cannot be eligible to participate in an employer-sponsored health plan.

The cost of certain high-efficiency heating and air conditioning systems, water heaters and stoves that burn biomass all qualify, along with labor costs for installing these items. Roughly 45-50% of the US population set New Year’s resolutions. This is phenomenal. Yet, what’s remarkable is that come February, March most New Year’s resolutions are gone by the wayside. In this article we explore some ideas to consider before you start which could help ensure your resolutions are kept and your goals are achieved.
5. Is Your Big Goal Unconscious?
Goals are most likely achieved when they are not merely forced, conscious desires. 95% of our day-to-day actions are unconscious and it is said that our personalities, feelings, thoughts, memories, personal values, beliefs, and habits are all stored in the unconscious mind. Therefore, it make sense that if you can more deeply imprint the goal/outcome on your unconscious mind,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], your resultant conscious behaviours and activities will take you towards your goal despite yourself.
A goal deeply embedded in your unconscious mind becomes a must. There are numerous simple techniques to help you imprint goals onto your unconscious mind. Largely, it involves visualisation (or mental move making as I call it) - experiencing your desired outcome in your mind’s eye and engaging all your senses whilst you are in a deeply relaxed state. So, why do most New Year’s Resolutions end up by the wayside come February, March? Well, there is a lack of understanding of how goal setting works. The traditional methods used to set goals are often ineffective. Contrary to popular belief I don’t personally think that goal setting should rely on the highly popular, so-called SMART goals technique (Specific-Measurable-Attainable-Time Oriented-Realistic). I think this is a useful small-goal tracking technique but should not be relied on for setting our goals in the first place. Setting goals and tracking goals are two totally different things in my view. Before you set about designing and setting either New Year’s Resolutions or Goals it’s worth considering the following:
1. Do You Have a Really BIG Goal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?
The reason most people fail to realise their goals is that their goals are boring and uninspiring in the first place. Don’t sweat the small stuff. You need something that’s gonna have you jumping out of bed in the morning with exhilaration. Big goals require you to raise your game. They require you to step up. You’re actually more likely to strive to achieve some big audacious goals than some small boring ones. Indeed, it’s not important that you know how to achieve the BIG goal. The “how” will show up in due course. The added benefit of BIG goals is the journey you are taken on and the personal development required in order to achieve them. Setting small attainable goals is fine but best done as part of an overall BIG goal objective. For example,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you’re more likely to keep a short-term goal (e.g. save 10% of your salary) if it’s part of your overall big goal (e.g. become a millionaire in 5 years time).
2. Are You Engaging Your Feelings?
If you can attach emotions and feelings to your goals, this will anchor them deep in your being. Feelings are the secret ingredient of successful goal setting. This is somehow overlooked in most goal setting methods. Writing down lists of goals on a piece of paper rarely sparks our emotions. However, describing and connecting with how one would feel (joyful, fulfilled,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], connected, wealthy, spiritual, proud,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], at peace, relieved, euphoric, etc) as a result of achieving a goal (i.e. the outcome) allows us to connect with our deeper selves. Some call this deeper part of us divine energy, source energy, spirit, immortality, God,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], etc. Really what you call it is irrelevant. What’s important is that you connect back up to that “something”. By associating feelings with our goals we connect with our deeper selves and our deepest desires in life rather than merely things to do on a list.
I once heard a guy talking about sales techniques and he asked people in the audience, what it was they were selling. People taught they were selling all kinds of products or services but actually what he said people were selling was actually feelings i.e. how the product or service made the person feel. I see goals we set for ourselves just like products we desire but what we really desire is the outcome,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], how it makes us feel.
Feelings elevate us from goal setting automatons into human beings driven by spirit/energy and a deeper purpose. The real benefit of adding emotions to our goals is that when we practice feeling the emotional outcome of the goal (before it has even happened) it removes disbelief and doubt from the goal setting equation. In a way it spiritualises the goal and you are drawing out your true self from within.
3. Do You Believe Without Doubt?
This is most often the missing ingredient in all goal setting. Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], will forever be remembered for writing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "Whatever the mind can conceive and believe it will achieve." The key word here is “believe”. As well as conceiving in your mind’s eye the circumstances and outcomes of your goals and achievement, you must believe you can do it in the first place. It’s not important whether anyone else believes or not, just you. You must be congruent, single-minded. One-directional certainty is required. Belief is the missing ingredient in most goal setting. There can be absolutely no doubt in your mind but that you can achieve the goal. The more you believe, the more life-force you infuse; the faster your desired outcome will come about.
True belief that the outcome will come about is what most people have trouble with.

In addition to forcing goals upon themselves people sometimes set goals that are not in line with their values. Values tend to reflect your upbringing. Listen to your own inner voice. Decide what is uniquely important to you?
For example, there’s little point making one of your goals as “starting my own business” if deep down inside you don’t see yourself as an entrepreneur/business person. Everyone prioritize their values differently. For some family, friends, relationship are higher on their hierarchy of values whilst for others it could be creativity, personal accomplishment, wealth etc.
Your values dictate your destiny. Ultimately, you will do what’s highest in your values. If your goals and values are aligned and you take action you will succeed. If you are unclear on what your values ACTUALLY are then it could be a very useful exercise to sit down, think about, write down and clarify your values and see if your goals fit with them. Keep in mind your top 5 values currently when you set your goals for the year.

In this new method, the door is left wide open for you to get very lost and confused.
Average people do not have years to study and practice many mystical paths around the world. And so it is not possible for you or anyone to recognise truth from false because you would not have the background to test and find the flaws in what the marketing says.
Another by-product of our dishonest society is that people become critical of everything for the sake of being critical because we cannot trust anyone. That is not wisdom, it is just looking for a fight and not at all beneficial. Being opposing for the sake of opposing does not equate to wisdom. Rather,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], be intelligently aware and if contradictions appear, see them and question them, demand an adequate response, otherwise, do not fall for it. At all times,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], keep an open mind, because you may find truth as easily as lies if your mind is seeking for what is there rather than seeking a flaw.

In this case, the devil is your own mind and imagination based on whatever thoughts are floating around through the identification to the music, the people around you, what you are thinking from the last few days, any past memory that is bothering you and the suggestions in your mind from the stories you heard of about what this exercise can do etc. If you have a negative past, it will bring it up to your mind, but that does not mean it is healed, or even that it is still hindering you. Memories do not imply hindrances. Imagination does not imply mystical healing, and recollection of past events could just open a wound that is already healed but now brought out as an excuse for current issues.
I will use one as an example for this lecture,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but please do not limit these thoughts to this example alone, seek others that you have encountered. There is a breath work program that I heard of which is a good example of this misleading attempt to create something ‘new’ out of the old and proven giving dangerous results.
This miracle was witnessed by many people in the crowd and very quickly, this teacher had thousands of people coming to his talks. He became quite famous and in one of his talks to a large crowd, he expelled a very loud fart. The people were so shocked that such a great man could do such a rude thing, that soon enough, he was left again with only his original five. As the six men sat together, the master explained. On the other hand, if a participant does not have any of these experiences, or do any movement, crying or other such expressions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they may feel yet worse about themselves feeling a failure because everyone else had some reaction. Then of course, there is pity or attack from the other participants or leaders saying that they are too closed and have too much blockages and need much harder work. There is always at least one in every groups that does not react and gets this feedback. Knowing this, our sub-conscious mind is even more susceptible to create some sort of reaction and have some sort of imagination so that we ‘fit in’ with the crowd. Yet more imagination which our self-lying tendency leads us to believe is profoundly beneficial. Even if no damage is done by the experience, the belief in the self-lie is harmful.
Do not go for fancy tricks, they are not what makes a path worthy to follow. Follow your own results, from your own heart, not your impressionable mind which seeks party tricks to gain followers looking for an easy touch on the forehead to bring enlightenment.
There was a great teacher in Turkey, said to have great wisdom. He only had five devoted disciples. For many years, his disciples asked him why, with all his great wisdom,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he did not have thousands of students. In the Sufi tradition, if the teacher feels the student would not understand the explanation, he just does not answer. And so time went on until one day the Teacher and his disciples where walking in the grand bazaar in Istanbul. As they where in the open area, a pigeon fell from the sky and landed dead at the teachers feet. He picked it up and said a little prayer, and the pigeon came to life.
This opens the door to self-destruction and fragmentation by building up more false ideas and letting the person think they are profound experiences. Mental imagery based on a susceptibility to external influences does not mean the image has anything to do with a spiritual message. This is far from any mystical training.
The devil in sheep’s clothing is the best way to describe it, and most often these ‘teachers’ are so convinced themselves, that they are very good at making others believe them.
In this ‘new’ method, the music is loud and aggressive, which will certainly bring out negative emotions and there is no point of focus for the mind by way of word or thought. The participants are left to do any physical movement they desire which is often guided by the sub-conscious thoughts placed in their mind from the stories of previous participants.
However there are many differences between the new and the old. For example in Sufism, the Zhikr is a practice which uses specific methods of breathing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], music and some movement. Through this practice, we may experience an altered state of consciousness.
Oh well, humans have been this way since the beginning of time, I see no reason it should change now, other than for the few who may see through the cracks.
A major problem is that a person may have some current emotional or psychological issues. They may do some workshop and feel through these experiences that there is some issue from the past. Then attribute their current problem to the past event, blame it on a parent for example, and thus deny the responsibility that the current issue is something they themselves have created and must take action to correct. It basically shifts responsibility away from the only point of true growth, oneself.
In our search for knowledge which we hope will make our life better, we take any opportunity that we are convinced will benefit us. The problem is that we trust others who appear to be in an authoritative position and are presented as trustworthy because our nature, which has long been buried but is still alive, is honesty and truth. That is the nature of our essence.
